Advent 4b General Prayer

Gracious heavenly Father, the heavens declare Your glory and the sky above Your handiwork.  Answer our prayers in power and wisdom for we come to You in the name of Jesus Christ:

Grant us a love for Your house like that of King David.  Help us to make worship a priority in our life and guide the members of this congregation so that all we say and do in this place would extend Your kingdom and give You glory.  Especially do we ask that You would give us opportunities to bear witness to You so that Your kingdom would grow in this place.

Just as You delivered Your people from slavery in Egypt by the hand of Your servant Moses so You have delivered us and all people from slavery to sin and death by the power of Your Son Jesus Christ.  We praise You for our salvation and the freedom from sin and death Jesus won for us.

Until that day we reach the heavenly Promised Land where we will have rest from our enemies and violent men will afflict us no more, empower those who serve in the state so that they would protect us and help us and punish our enemies.  Especially do we pray that You would protect our military personnel and support their families during times of separation.

Strengthen us by the Gospel and preaching of Jesus Christ so that we might show forth the obedience of faith, trusting in Your Son Jesus Christ for our salvation and following his example in holy living.  In all that we say and do, help us by Your Spirit to live as Your children.

We thank You for the ministry of Your holy angels who exist to do Your will and aid Your people.  Because there is spiritual battle that rages around us, send Your holy angels to aid us as we travel through this world.

When we face difficulties and hard times and moments of temptation that seem overwhelming, remind us that nothing is impossible with You.  Come to the aid of all those who stand in need of Your almighty power:  the poor and the hungry and the lonely and the persecuted.  Let them know Your goodness and power in a mighty way.

Whatever else You see that we need; whatever serves our neighbor and brings glory to You, grant us dear Father in heaven and throughout our earthly pilgrimage help us to say with Mary:  we are Your servants, let it be to us according to Your Word.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
